योत्स्यमानानवेक्षेऽहं य एतेऽत्र समागताः।
धार्तराष्ट्रस्य दुर्बुद्धेर्युद्धे प्रियचिकीर्षवः।।1.23।।
।।1.23।।दुष्टबुद्धि दुर्योधनका युद्धमें प्रिय करनेकी इच्छावाले जो ये राजालोग इस सेनामें आये हुए हैं? युद्ध करनेको उतावले हुए इन सबको मैं देख लूँ।

।।1.23।। व्याख्या धार्तराष्ट्र (टिप्पणी प0 18) दुर्बुद्धेर्युद्धे प्रियचिकीर्षवः यहाँ दुर्योधनको दुष्टबुद्धि कहकर अर्जुन यह बताना चाहते हैं कि इस दुर्योधनने हमारा नाश करनेके लिये आजतक कई तरहके षड्यन्त्र रचे हैं। हमें अपमानित करनेके लिये कई तरहके उद्योग किये हैं। नियमके अनुसार और न्यायपूर्वक हम आधे राज्यके अधिकारी हैं पर उसको भी यह हड़पना चाहता है देना नहीं चाहता। ऐसी तो इसकी दुष्टबुद्धि है और यहाँ आये हुए राजालोग युद्धमें इसका प्रिय करना चाहते हैं वास्तवमें तो मित्रोंका यह कर्तव्य होता है कि वे ऐसा काम करें ऐसी बात बतायें जिससे अपने मित्रका लोकपरलोकमें हित हो। परन्तु ये राजालोग दुर्योधनकी दुष्टबुद्धिको शुद्ध न करके उलटे उसको बढ़ाना चाहते हैं और दुर्योधनसे युद्ध कराकर युद्धमें उसकी सहायता करके उसका पतन ही करना चाहते हैं। तात्पर्य है कि दुर्योधनका हित किस बातमें है उसको राज्य भी किस बातसे मिलेगा और उसका परलोक भी किस बातसे सुधरेगा इन बातोंका वे विचार ही नहीं कर रहे हैं। अगर ये राजालोग उसको यह सलाह देते कि भाई कमसेकम आधा राज्य तुम रखो और पाण्डवोंका आधा राज्य पाण्डवोंको दे दो तो इससे दुर्योधनका आधा राज्य भी रहता और उसका परलोक भी सुधरता। योत्स्यमानानवेक्षेऽहं य एतेऽत्र समागताः इन युद्धके लिये उतावले होनेवालोंको जरा देख तो लूँ। इन्होंने अधर्मका अन्यायका पक्ष लिया है इसलिये ये हमारे सामने टिक नहीं सकेंगे नष्ट हो जायँगे। योत्स्यमानान् कहनेका तात्पर्य है कि इनके मनमें युद्धकी ज्यादा आ रही है अतः देखूँ तो सही कि ये हैं कौन सम्बन्ध अर्जुनके ऐसा कहनेपर भगवान्ने क्या किया इसको सञ्जय आगेके दो श्लोकोंमें कहते हैं।
।।1.23।। पूर्व श्लोक में कही गयी बात को ही अर्जुन इस श्लोक में बल देकर कह रहा है। शत्रु सैन्य के निरीक्षण के कारण को भी वह यहाँ स्पष्ट करता है। एक कर्मशील व्यक्ति होने के कारण वह कोई अनावश्यक संकट मोल नहीं लेना चाहता। इसलिये वह देखना चाहता है कि वे कौन से दुर्मति सत्तामदोन्मत्त और प्रलोभन से प्रताड़ित लोग हैं जो कौरव सेनाओं में सम्मिलित होकर सर्वथा अन्यायी तानाशाह दुर्योधन का समर्थन कर रहे हैं।
1.23 These who have assembled here and want to accomplish in the war what is dear to the perverted son of Dhrtarastra, I find them to be intent on fighting.
1.23. For I desire to observe those who are assembled here to fight, wishing to please in battle the evil-minded Duryodhana (the son of Dhritarashtra).
1.23. - 1.24. Sanjaya said O descendant of Bharata (Dhrtarastra) ! Thus instructed by Gudakesa (Arjuna), Hrsikesa halted the best chariot at a place in between the two armies, in front of Bhisma and Drona and of all the rulers of the earth; and the said: O son of Prtha! Behold these Kurus, assembled.
1.23 योत्स्यमानान् with the object of fighting? अवेक्षे observe? अहम् I? ये who? एते those? अत्र here (in this Kurukshetra)? समागताः assembled? धार्तराष्ट्रस्य of the son of Dhritarashtra? दुर्बुद्धेः of the evilminded? युद्धे in battle? प्रियचिकीर्षवः wishing to please.No Commentary.
1.23 Sri Sankaracharya did not comment on this sloka. The commentary starts from 2.10.

1.20 - 1.25 Arjuna said - Sanjaya said Thus, directed by him, Sri Krsna did immediately as He had been directed, while Bhisma, Drona and others and all the kings were looking on. Such is the prospect of victory for your men.

But what was it Arjuna desired to see? He desired to see those of the opposing army gathered there desirous of doing what was agreeable to Duryodhana, this is the construction.
Madhvacarya has no commentary so we present Baladeva Vidyabhusanas. So Arjuna is saying to Lord Krishna let me scrutinise those friends of mine who have chosen to join the ranks of the Kauravas for satisfying the evil minded Duryodhana instead of opposing him for eradicating his evil mindedness which denotes he does not even know how to protect his own life. This request is reasonable in order to view my opponents.
There is no commentary for this verse.
It could be asked of Arjuna, doesnt he already know the worth of his opponents on the battlefield? Certainly Arjuna is fully cognizant of the worthiness of Bhishma and Drona as case in point as well as so many others. But in this verse this objection would be clarified by Arjunas reply that he wishes to see all those who are favouring the evil minded Duryodhana, the son of Dhritarastra.
